The Mecklenburg County Food and Facilities Sanitation Program is a component of the Environmental Health Division of the Mecklenburg County Health Department. The mandated program is administered by the local Health Department pursuant to Chapter 130A of the General Statutes of North Carolina.
There are over 4400 food service facilities operating in Mecklenburg County and the number increases daily. F&FS Program staff issue permits for the operation of these facilities and are required to conduct over 13,000 facility inspections per year. This is done to help maintain high levels of sanitation and protect public health. Employees in the program work for the Mecklenburg County Health Department. They are required to be a Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners, and to meet authorization requirements set by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The F&FS Program offices are open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mon - Fri, except on County holidays or other days as approved by the County Manager or Board of Commissioners. Staff are on call to handle emergencies that occur after hours or on holidays. Emergency contact is initiated by calling the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
Staff also reviews plans for new construction, existing facilities and the remodeling of facilities, investigates requests of unsanitary conditions and poor food handling practices, and provides educational information to workers to help prevent foodborne illnesses.
