WELCOME to the VOLUNTEER PAGE for Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation!

MoonBats (2).jpgWE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR "NATURE AT NIGHT" on October 15th!  

Celebrate all things nocturnal during McDowell Nature Center's 13th Annual NATURE AT NIGHT FESTIVAL! This fun-filled, educational event shines a spotlight on what nature has to offer after the sun goes down! The evening will include live animals, crafts, night hikes, hayrides, s’mores, interactive booths and much more! This event is rain or shine. Please dress in layers to be outdoors. Goodie bags, snacks and water will be provided for all Volunteers; dinner is provided for the evening shift only. PLEASE SPECIFY 1 SHIFT ONLY WHEN SIGNING UP!

Day/Setup shift – 10AM-2PM: Set up of tables/chairs, tents, supplies, stations, etc.

Evening/Event shift – 3PM-9PM: Assist Park & Recreation/Nature Center staff with stations: food, crafts, information tables, hayride, etc. *Volunteers must be at least age 12; anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/adult at all times.

THE FALL SPORT SEASON IS GOING STRONG! We depend on hundreds of Volunteer coaches every year to help make our Youth Sports AMAZING! 
>>> Registration for Winter Basketball continues - we still need lots of Coaches!

    • Go to > Recreation Centers to find contact information for a Center that will be convenient for you. *Note that sport offerings may vary due to enrollment numbers.
    • Check with your preferred Recreation Center for available coach positions.
    • All Youth Sport Coaches MUST have a current Volunteer application/background check on file.

CONTACT to check your status, or for the Volunteer application link - Please have a Recreation Center in mind where you would like to Coach (or we can help you with that!)

Do you carry a plastic grocery bag with you everywhere? Do you collect the papers, bottles, cans, and Styrofoam that storms and people leave behind? Do you LOVE your Parks and want to help care for the environment? If you answered YES, YES, YES, then you are a PARK PICKER, and we'd like to THANK YOU!

*PRE-APPROVED or STAFF-REQUESTED SCOUT PROJECTS ARE BEING UPDATED (August 2022) - please contact with YOUR idea! We consider limited Scout projects on a case-by-case basis.  

- If you would like to schedule a GROUP PROJECT at a Park, Greenway or Nature Preserve for your company, church, Scout troop, university, club, neighborhood association or community group...PLEASE CONTACT US! Park projects for groups of 10 or more Volunteers can now be scheduled on Tues/Wed/Thur mornings through November! If you need to schedule at a different time, or on a weekend, we are happy to arrange for a self-guided litter cleanup on your schedule.

 We LOVE our Volunteers, and we want to make it EASY for you to come and help your community! Here are a couple of things you need to know:

- For some Volunteer opportunities, you need to enroll in our Volunteer Program - enrollment includes an on-line application and a background check. For Volunteer Screening Guidelines click on the link below.

- You MUST register/enroll in the Volunteer Program to be a Coach for any sport; or to assist with an ongoing program on a regular basis, IN PERSON OR VIRTUALLY (Example: tutoring once a week, teaching ESL).  To receive the application link, if needed,  please contact 

 - You do NOT need to enroll in the Volunteer Program for one-day events or projects, or to help with a program ONE time, or for less than 10 hours total (Example: chaperoning ONE field trip for an after-school program; Volunteering for a Park project).

At this time Park & Recreation is not accepting court-ordered community service placements.  


- Background checks will be conducted for all applicants age 16 and up when enrolling in our volunteer program.

- Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.

- Volunteers working with Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services must be at least 18 years old.
