As of July 19, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the new two-dose Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted, for adults ages 18 and older who have not already received a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine has emergency use authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Read the FDA news release for more information.
Novavax vaccine doses are not yet available. Mecklenburg County Public Health is awaiting shipments and will update this page as soon as it begins offering the vaccine.
COVID-19 Vaccines and You
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for everyone aged 6 months and older, including pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. And as of July 19, the CDC also recommends the new two-dose Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted, for adults ages 18 and older.
The primary series of the vaccine, followed by booster doses, protects against severe COVID-19 illness, hospitalization, and death by triggering your body to make antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 illness. Vaccine immunity is long lasting and safe.
SARS-CoV-2 infection also triggers your body to make antibodies against re-infection, but that natural immunity is temporary (about 90 days) and comes with the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
People who are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines can still contract and spread the virus, so continue to follow all other safety precautions to protect yourself and others and stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community:
- Wash your hands frequently to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus
- Keep your distance from others
- Wear a mask inside when you are unable to be at least 6 feet away from others
